Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo in 10 days at a glance

The best 10-day route is three nights each in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, with a short flight or a daytime train between them. That gives you two full days in every capital, with private transfers and guides arranged around your pace.

Would you rather swap Copenhagen for Helsinki? Our 10-day Norway, Sweden and Finland route covers that, and every plan is a starting point that we tailor to your dates.

Days | Where | What fits 1 to 3 | Copenhagen | Rosenborg, private harbour cruise, Louisiana and Kronborg coast day 4 to 6 | Stockholm | Gamla Stan, Vasa Museum, archipelago by boat 7 to 9 | Oslo | Opera House roof, MUNCH, Vigeland Park, fjord cruise Copenhagen to Stockholm | By air | Direct flight, a little over 1 hour Stockholm to Oslo | Train or air | About 5 to 5.5 hours by train, about 1 hour by air 10 | Home from Oslo | Airport express about 19 minutes

Ten days is the right length for Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo. Spend three nights in each city, move between them by a short flight or a daytime train, and you get two full days in every capital plus an easy arrival afternoon. It suits guests who want three very different cities at an unhurried pace, with a private driver and guide wherever that helps.

This page covers the Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo version of a Scandinavian circuit. If you would rather include Helsinki, our 10-day Norway, Sweden and Finland route is the better fit. For a longer journey, the Nordic Capitals & Fjord Passage is a 13-day summer programme that links these capitals with Helsinki, Bergen and the fjords, and we tailor it to each guest.

How to split 10 days between three capitals

Count nights, not days. Arrive on day 1, leave on day 10, and you have nine nights: three in each city. That gives two full days in Copenhagen, two in Stockholm and two in Oslo. Arrival and moving days stay lighter, with time for a walk, a boat or a long dinner.

Moving between cities takes about half a day, so we plan each transfer around an unhurried morning start. A private transfer meets you at the airport or station, and you arrive in time for an afternoon walk and dinner, not a rushed check-in.

Which order works best: Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, or the reverse?

We usually suggest Copenhagen, then Stockholm, then Oslo. Copenhagen is the easiest arrival: the airport is about 8 km from the centre. Stockholm adds scale and water. Oslo comes last, with the fjord on its doorstep and a natural starting point if you later want to continue to Bergen.

The reverse order works just as well. What matters is flying into one end and out of the other, so you never double back. Arriving in Copenhagen and flying home from Oslo saves you the journey back to Copenhagen on your last day.

Days 1 to 3: Copenhagen

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

A private transfer takes you from the airport to your hotel. Most of the central sights sit within about a 20-minute walk of each other, so the first afternoon needs no transport at all. Keep it open: a walk along the water, an early dinner and an early night.

Day 2: Royal Copenhagen and the harbour

Visit Rosenborg Castle, where the Danish crown jewels are kept, and watch the changing of the guard at Amalienborg around midday. In the afternoon, take a private harbour cruise through the canals, which is part of our Private Copenhagen Tour. Spend the rest of the day in the design shops and let dinner set the pace.

Day 3: The coast north of the city

Louisiana, the museum of modern art, lies about 35 km north of Copenhagen in a park above the Sound, with sculptures in the landscape and views across the water. Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, the setting for Hamlet's Elsinore, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. With a private driver you see both in one unhurried day, with no timetables to watch.

For a fuller plan, see our 3-day Copenhagen itinerary, and read how many days Copenhagen needs if you are weighing an extra night.

Days 4 to 6: Stockholm

Day 4: Fly to Stockholm

A direct flight from Copenhagen takes a little over an hour, and a private transfer from Arlanda takes you to the hotel. The Arlanda Express reaches Stockholm Central in about 18 minutes if you prefer rail. Spend the afternoon in Gamla Stan, the old town. Stockholm is built on 14 islands linked by 57 bridges, so even a short walk crosses water.

Day 5: Vasa, Skansen and Djurgården

The Vasa Museum shows a warship that sank in 1628 and is, in the museum's words, the only preserved 17th-century ship in the world. Close by on Djurgården, Skansen, founded in 1891, describes itself as the world's oldest open-air museum. Our Private Stockholm Tour includes privately guided visits to the Royal Palace, City Hall and the Vasa, which suits this day well.

Day 6: The archipelago

The archipelago has about 30,000 islands, skerries and rocks. Vaxholm is about an hour from the centre by boat, and Fjäderholmarna is closer, about 20 to 30 minutes, with services running roughly from May to mid-September. A private motorboat day with a captain and lunch, which is part of the Private Stockholm Tour, gives you the whole day on the water at your own pace. It runs in season, from May to September.

Outside the summer months, Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO site on Lake Mälaren, is a good alternative on a Saturday or Sunday, when the palace is open. It is within about 40 minutes of the centre.

Days 7 to 10: Oslo and the journey home

Day 7: Train to Oslo

A mid-morning train from Stockholm puts you in Oslo in the afternoon. Walk to the Opera House in Bjørvika, a few minutes from Oslo Central Station, and climb its sloping roof for views over the city centre.

Day 8: MUNCH and the Vigeland Park

MUNCH, in the same district and about five to ten minutes on foot from the Central Station, has 13 floors and the largest Edvard Munch collection in the world, and a version of The Scream is always on display. The top floor looks over the city and the Oslo Fjord. In the afternoon, go to the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Frogner Park: more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, free to enter and open all year, day and night.

Day 9: Akershus and the fjord

Spend the morning at Akershus Fortress, the medieval fortress in the middle of the city. In the afternoon, take a quiet fjord cruise on one of the electric boats that sail daily, or let us arrange a private boat on the Oslo Fjord. If you would rather see the city with someone who knows it, a private Oslo city tour with a local guide can be built around architecture, the waterfront, museums or a neighbourhood of your choice. If you want more of Norway, our Norway summer guide shows how to continue to Bergen and the fjords.

Day 10: The journey home

The last morning is built around your departure time. The Flytoget airport express takes about 19 minutes from Oslo Central to the airport, with departures about every 10 minutes, and we can arrange a private transfer if you prefer.

How to travel between the cities

Copenhagen to Stockholm

The direct flight takes a little over an hour, and for most guests it is the simplest choice. A direct high-speed train takes about 5 hours 15 minutes, but direct departures are not always available. With a change in Malmö the journey takes closer to six hours. We check the current timetable when we plan your dates.

Stockholm to Oslo

The train takes about 5 to 5.5 hours from city centre to city centre, which saves the airport time at both ends. A direct flight takes about an hour. Either way, we can arrange private transfers at the station or airport, so there is no queue for a taxi after a long morning.

Copenhagen to Oslo

If you ever link Copenhagen and Oslo directly, or want a night at sea, an overnight ferry sails daily between the two cities. It leaves in the late afternoon, around 16:30, and arrives at about 10:00 the next morning, a crossing of about 17.5 hours. On our Nordic Capitals & Fjord Passage, guests sail from Oslo to Copenhagen in a private cabin. The flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.

When is the best time to go?

Late May to September is the strongest window. Days are long, with about 17.5 hours of daylight in Copenhagen and more than 18 hours in Stockholm around midsummer. Tivoli keeps its summer season from April to September, and the archipelago boats run at their fullest.

Winter works too, with a different character. Tivoli opens for Christmas from November to January, and Stockholm's Christmas markets run from late November. Daylight is short: about 6 hours in Stockholm and about 7 hours in Copenhagen at the December solstice. If you are planning for winter, we shift the archipelago day to indoor plans such as the old town and Stockholm's museums, with Drottningholm kept for a weekend.

Can you add days to this route?

Yes, and the easiest addition is Bergen. The Bergen Line from Oslo takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours and crosses the Hardangervidda plateau, reaching 1,237 metres at its highest point. Three more days give you Bergen and a fjord, and our Essential Norway programme shows how Oslo, Flåm and Bergen fit together over seven days. Helsinki is the other natural extension, linked to Stockholm by an overnight ferry.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough for Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo?

Yes. Three nights in each city gives two full days plus arrival time, enough to see the main sights at a calm pace. If you prefer more depth, add a night in the city you care about most rather than a fourth city.

What is the best order for Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo?

Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo works well because it builds from an easy arrival to the fjord. Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen is equally good. Choose the direction that lets you fly into one city and home from another.

Should I fly or take the train between the cities?

Fly from Copenhagen to Stockholm, where the direct train is not always running. Between Stockholm and Oslo the train is a comfortable alternative at about 5 to 5.5 hours, and a flight takes about an hour.

Can I travel from Copenhagen to Oslo by ferry?

Yes. The overnight ferry leaves in the late afternoon and arrives the next morning, about 17.5 hours in total. It suits guests who like a slower pace; the flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.

Can I do Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo in 7 days?

Yes. With two nights in each city you keep the same route but lose one full day per city, so you see the highlights rather than the detail. Flying between the cities keeps the moving days short.

Can I add Helsinki or the Norwegian fjords?

Yes. Helsinki connects to Stockholm by an overnight ferry that takes about 17 hours (16 to 18 depending on direction), and Bergen is a scenic day by train from Oslo. We can build either extension into your dates.

  • Private touring in Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen
  • Fjord chapter: Bergen, Flåm and Nærøyfjord
  • Two overnight sea crossings between capitals
  • Evening archipelago dinner cruise in Stockholm

This thirteen-day private Scandinavia journey connects four Nordic capitals with one focused fjord chapter in Western Norway. You begin in Helsinki with a calm arrival, private touring, Porvoo, and an archipelago experience before crossing the Baltic Sea overnight to Stockholm. The first part of the route is built around design, water, old towns, and soft city pacing, with private transfers and port logistics handled throughout.

Stockholm continues the rhythm with a gentle arrival, spa time, private city touring, and an evening archipelago dinner cruise. Then the journey shifts from capitals to scenery as you fly to Bergen and move into Norway’s fjord country. The route through Bergen, Flåm, Nærøyfjord, and Oslo gives the journey its dramatic middle: waterfalls, mountain roads, fjord water, and the option to include the Flåm Railway if timing allows.

The final stretch returns to the sea. After Oslo, you board the overnight ferry to Copenhagen, giving the itinerary a second Nordic crossing and a smoother finish than another airport transfer. Copenhagen closes the journey with architecture, canals, design, food, and a final night that feels polished but not overfilled. Departure is handled privately the next morning.
