Christmas in Helsinki at a glance

Christmas in Helsinki is at its best from early December to 22 December, when the Christmas market on Senate Square is open and the centre is lit up. On 24 and 25 December the city is quiet, with reduced public transport and many shops, museums and restaurants closed.

For the full experience, spend two or three nights in Helsinki before the holiday and Christmas itself in Lapland, as on our Private Helsinki & Lapland Winter Tour.

Dates | What is happening | What is open | Our tip 27 Nov to 22 Dec | Christmas market on Senate Square, lights in the centre | Everything, normal hours | The best window for a city visit 23 Dec | Market closed, last-minute shopping | Most shops and restaurants | Last full day for shopping 24 Dec | Christmas Eve, the main family day | Many shops close early; trams reduced from 16:00 | Book dinner months ahead 25 Dec | The quietest day of the year | Hotels, a few restaurants, public saunas | A good day to be in Lapland 26 Dec | The city starts to reopen | More restaurants and cafés, some museums reopen | Sightseeing again 27 to 30 Dec | Between Christmas and New Year | Mostly normal hours | Good for Helsinki after Lapland

Helsinki at Christmas depends almost entirely on your dates. In the first three weeks of December the city is decorated, the market is busy and everything keeps normal hours. Over the holiday itself Finns stay at home with their families, and for two days the capital is one of the quietest cities in Europe.

That makes timing the main decision, followed by where you spend Christmas Eve. Below we cover the market dates, what is open on each day, where to have Christmas dinner, the weather and the light, and how we combine a few nights in Helsinki with Lapland.

When is the best time for Christmas in Helsinki?

For most first-time visitors, the best window is from early December to 22 December. The Helsinki Christmas Market on Senate Square runs from 27 November to 22 December 2026, the streets in the centre are lit, and shops, museums and restaurants keep their usual hours.

Christmas Eve is the main day of Christmas in Finland. From the afternoon of 24 December the city goes quiet, Christmas Day is calmer still, and Boxing Day is when cafés and restaurants begin to reopen. If you want to be in Finland for 24 and 25 December, we usually suggest spending those days in Lapland, with Helsinki before or after.

If you are still choosing dates, send us your travel window and who is travelling, and we will suggest how to split the days between Helsinki and the north.

The Helsinki Christmas Market: dates and what to expect

The Helsinki Christmas Market, Tuomaan Markkinat in Finnish, is Helsinki's oldest outdoor Christmas market. In 2026 it runs from 27 November to 22 December on Senate Square, below Helsinki Cathedral. It opens from 11:00 to 19:00 Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, and until 20:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Expect wooden stalls with Finnish crafts, wool and seasonal food, an old-fashioned carousel and a restaurant yard. Weekend evenings are the busiest time, so for a calmer visit go on a weekday before the after-work crowd arrives.

The market closes before Christmas, so if you arrive on 23 December or later you will miss it. Manta's Christmas market, next to the Havis Amanda statue by Market Square, is listed by MyHelsinki as open from 4 December to 6 January, and there are smaller markets at the Old Student House and at Teurastamo.

What is open in Helsinki on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day?

Christmas Eve, 24 December. The morning feels almost normal, but the city closes during the afternoon. Many shops shut early, and HSL runs a Sunday timetable on public transport, with trams and R trains reduced from 16:00.

Christmas Day, 25 December. This is the quietest day of the year. HSL starts its Sunday timetable at about 11:00, and the Suomenlinna ferry runs a Sunday service all day. Many museums close on both 24 and 25 December: the Helsinki City Museum, for example, was closed on both days in 2025 and reopened on Boxing Day.

Boxing Day, 26 December. The city starts to wake up. More restaurants and cafés open, and public transport runs a Sunday timetable.

What stays open over the holiday: hotels and their restaurants, a selection of independent restaurants, and the public saunas, which MyHelsinki says are heated throughout the holidays. Opening hours change from year to year, so we check them for each guest's dates once the December lists are published.

Where to have Christmas dinner in Helsinki

Book early. Christmas Eve dinner is the hardest table in the city to find, because many restaurants close for the holiday and those that open fill up with locals and hotel guests. Hotel restaurants are the most reliable choice on 24 and 25 December, and by Boxing Day the choice widens again.

A traditional Finnish Christmas table is a buffet of ham, fish and oven-baked casseroles such as lanttulaatikko, made with swede. In late November and early December many restaurants also serve Christmas menus for office parties, known as pikkujoulu, so weekday tables are easier to find than Friday and Saturday ones.

When we plan a Christmas trip, we reserve the Christmas Eve dinner at the same time as the hotels, rather than leaving it until December.

Finnish Christmas traditions worth planning around

  • Lucia, 13 December. Finland's Lucia is traditionally crowned in Helsinki Cathedral at 17:00, and the procession usually leaves from the Cathedral steps at 18:00 for a tour of the city.
  • The Christmas sauna. Many Helsinki residents go to the sauna, and some swim in the icy sea, over Christmas. A private wood-fired sauna evening is the most comfortable way to try it.
  • Seurasaari Christmas Path. A free family event at the Seurasaari open-air museum, held on one Sunday in mid-December, from 12:00 to 17:00 (14 December in 2025).
  • The Declaration of Christmas Peace. At noon on 24 December, Christmas Peace is declared from the balcony of the Brinkkala House in Turku, the former capital.

Will there be snow? Weather and daylight in December

Snow at Christmas is not guaranteed in Helsinki. On Finland's southern coast a white Christmas is far from certain: the Finnish Meteorological Institute puts it at about every second year on the south-western coast, while in Lapland a white Christmas comes almost every year. MyHelsinki also notes that some Christmases in the city have had little or no snow.

Days are short. Around the winter solstice the sun rises at about 09:25 and sets at about 15:15 in Helsinki, which gives under six hours of daylight. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the late morning and early afternoon, and keep the evenings for the lights, a sauna and dinner.

If snow, huskies and the northern lights are part of the plan, Lapland is the reliable choice. Our guide on how to get to Lapland from Helsinki covers flights, the night train and timings.

Helsinki at Christmas with children

Children usually love the market carousel, the Seurasaari Christmas Path and, when there is snow, the sledding hills that MyHelsinki recommends. A private reindeer visit near Helsinki works well on a day when the city is quiet.

Santa Claus Village is in Rovaniemi, in Lapland. If meeting Santa is the point of the trip, plan at least a few nights in the north. Our comparison of Levi and Rovaniemi helps you choose where to stay.

How to combine Helsinki and Lapland at Christmas

Most of our Christmas guests spend two or three nights in Helsinki and the rest of the trip in Lapland. The order matters: Helsinki before 22 December catches the market and the city at its liveliest, while Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are easier to enjoy in Lapland, where snow is far more likely and hotels plan their own Christmas evenings.

Book the connection north early. Christmas week is one of the busiest times to travel in Finland. In recent years VR, the national rail operator, has said its most popular Christmas departures sell out, especially trains heading north and the sleeper cabins to Lapland.

Our Private Helsinki & Lapland Winter Tour is a seven-day starting point: two nights at Hotel Kämp with a private day in the city and a seafront sauna, then a flight to Ivalo for two nights on Lake Inari and two at Gáldu Hotel & Spa in Saariselkä. It runs from December to March and starts from €7,900 per person, based on two guests sharing. It is not a fixed Christmas programme: for Christmas dates we adjust the order of the nights and add the Christmas Eve dinner.

If you would rather stay in the south, our four-day Helsinki and Porvoo package adds a day in the old wooden town of Porvoo and starts from €3,500 per person, based on two guests sharing.

When to plan it yourself, and when private help is worth it

A few days in early December for the market and the lights are easy to arrange on your own. Stay in the centre, walk between the sights and use the trams, and you will not need us.

Private planning earns its place when you travel over 24 to 26 December. That is when the things that usually take care of themselves stop working: restaurants close, transport is reduced and the flights north fill up. We book the dinner tables, private transfers, a private city tour on a day that suits the opening hours, and the connection to Lapland as one plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Helsinki worth visiting at Christmas?

Yes, especially in the first three weeks of December, when the Christmas market is open and the city is lit up. Over 24 and 25 December Helsinki is very quiet, so plan restaurants in advance or spend those days in Lapland.

Is the Helsinki Christmas Market open on Christmas Eve?

No. In 2026 the market on Senate Square closes on 22 December. Manta's Christmas market by Market Square is listed as open until 6 January.

How many days do you need in Helsinki at Christmas?

Two or three nights are enough for the market, the centre, a sauna and a good dinner. With more time, add Porvoo or continue to Lapland.

  • Two nights at Hotel Kämp with a full private day in Helsinki
  • Two nights on the shore of Lake Inari, the heart of Sámi culture
  • Reindeer, huskies, a snowmobile ride on the frozen lake and two guided aurora outings
  • Two nights at a forest spa beside Urho Kekkonen National Park

Seven days that join Finland's design capital with the far north of Lapland. You start with two nights in Helsinki: a full day with your own guide and driver, then a seafront sauna and a dip in the frozen Baltic. It is the city at its most Finnish, not a stopover on the way north.

A morning flight takes you to Ivalo, the northernmost airport in Finland. From here the trip splits between two quiet bases. Inari sits on the shore of a vast frozen lake and is the centre of Sámi culture in Finland, with long dark skies for the Northern Lights. Saariselkä lies on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of the largest wilderness areas in the country.

Inari comes first for the active days: reindeer, a snowmobile ride across the lake with ice fishing, a husky safari and evenings out under the aurora. The last two nights at Gáldu Hotel & Spa slow the pace down, with a forest spa, a snowshoe walk into the fells and a private aurora hunt by car. Ivalo Airport sits between the two bases, so no transfer takes more than about an hour.
