An afternoon around a campfire

The experience begins in Helsinki, then moves out toward a quieter forest setting where the city drops away. There is no restaurant kitchen here. The cooking happens outside, close to the fire, with the smell of woodsmoke in the air and the forest doing most of the decoration. In winter, the contrast is sharper: snow underfoot, heat from the flames, steam rising from the pot. In summer, it feels slower and greener, with space to breathe.

Together with your guide, you prepare Finnish lohikeitto, a salmon soup made with fresh salmon, potatoes, root vegetables, cream, and dill. It is one of those Finnish dishes that looks simple until you understand why it works: soft heat, clean ingredients, and no need to impress anyone. Guests take part in the process rather than watching from the side. Cutting, stirring, tasting, waiting. The fire sets the pace, which is a polite way of saying that nature does not care about your Google Calendar.

While the soup cooks, your guide shares stories about Finnish food culture, forests, and the small rituals around eating outside. Then you sit down to eat by the fire, with warm soup, bread, and something hot to drink. The take-home moment is not a recipe card. It is the feeling of having made lunch the old-fashioned way: slowly, together, and outside.
